The new rules prohibit the use of certain disposable plastic products for which alternative exists. In addition to the above, the Directive introduces concrete measures to reduce the use of the most frequently wasted plastic products. The Directive will prohibit the use of disposable plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloons and cotton swabs from 2021. Member States have agreed to reach the 90% target for the collection of plastic bottles by 2029 and that plastic bottles shall contain at least 25% of recycled material by 2025 and 30% by 2030. Member States shall also ensure the collection of abandoned or lost fishing gear: by 2025 at least 50% of it should be collected and 15% of it should be recycled. In the future, the tobacco industry and the manufacturers of plastic fishing gear shall bear the costs of collecting, transporting and managing such plastic waste.
