In the beginning, the online space functioned as an information network, but as time progressed, it became more and more interactive, which eventually led to the emergence of social networking sites. Citizens joining the online space in increasing numbers, in contrast to previous media consumption, no longer simply appear on the Internet as receivers of messages, as they themselves become a force of communication. Due to the social media’s function of increasing the possibility of citizen participation, especially in the initial period, high expectations were placed on the new medium. Many people hoped that it could lead societies in the direction of democratization, but at the same time there were concerns, since with the devaluation of the role of traditional, professional journalism, democracy could lose its former „watchdog”. The digital environment has strongly influenced not only the the citizens, but also had an impact on the development of political communication. Along with the emergence and development of the Internet, the enormous abundance of information pouring on citizens has driven political communication in the direction of increased personalization and negativity. Speaking of the growing role of the web, the usability of online measurable data to reveal real political preferences has been raised in several scientific works. There are several methodological approaches to measuring the performance of politicians and parties in the online environment, however, the field is rather immature, and due to the extremely rapid change of the online presence, most of the methods can now be considered outdated. In the thesis, relying on the aforementioned theoretical foundations, I examine the Facebook communication of the aspirants for prime minister in the opposition primary election in 2021, as well as the two most supported prime minister candidates in the 2022 parliamentary election, highlighting the personalization and negativity tendencies that appear in the online campaign. By analyzing the online discourse about elections and elected politicians, I review the weight of professional and user participants in the conversation, which makes the extent of citizen participation visible. I also examine the correlations of online results with real political preferences, in the framework of which I take into account both the political actors’ own Facebook communication and Internet mentions about them.
