| Tartalmi kivonat: | Károly Brentán, S. J. was one of the most known Jesuits of Hungarian origin in the 18th century. He was engaged in evangelization in the Province of Quito of the Society for about 14 years, and from 1742 to 1747 he held the position of Provincial Superior. During these years he travelled extensively in the South American region of his Province, taking notes of the history, the people and the flora and fauna of the land. In 1747 he was elected Procurator, therefore he had to visit Rome and to make a report directly to the Superior General on the state of Quito. For this purpose in 1748-1750 he made a trip on the Amazon River, crossing the adjacent Portuguese territories. This paper tries to shed some light on the circumstances of his journey by evaluating the documents of the Treaty of Madrid found in the archives of Lisbon, and presenting his unique map of 1751, the only thing remained from his heritage. |
